yves klein’s first love was judo, not art. at 24 years old he left paris for japan to pursue judo and became one of the first europeans to receive a fourth-dan black belt. he later opened the judo academie de paris. this book, the foundations of judo, is the first ever english translation of the his original book, les fondements du judo, published by grasset in 1954.
“i have often been asked if judo played a part in my pictorial conception. i have until now always answered that it did not. …one like the other has lived with me like i live with my physical body!” -yves klein
